Behind the Scenes with the Sea to Sky Cam

This National Geographic behind the scenes video, shot during the making of “The Man Who Can Fly”, is a great demonstration of the systems that the Sea to Sky Cam uses. Close ups of the motor frame, trolley and rigging are revealed.

Sea to Sky Cable Cam, Demo Reel 2010

Developed and engineered by Matt Maddaloni and Bryan Smith, The Sea To Sky Cam is a lightweight, ultra stable flying camera which achieves dynamic camera angles in very complex environments. Used for commercial applications, live events, television and documentary work, the Sea to Sky Cam has traveled the world and operates in both horizontal and vertical applications. Spanning distances up to a 1000 feet, traveling from a crawl to 70 kph and carrying any camera up to 40lbs, the system provides unlimited dolly angles in locations that would be impossible any other way.

*The demo video shown here has had absolutely no post production image stabilization added. Video was shot on Sony EX, Sony F3 and RED. The shot at 1:19 of three mountain bikers was acquired using a Canon 7D and the instability of the sensor is apparent here. We do not recommend using current DSLR’s for cable cam work as this shot demonstrates unless movement is kept to a crawl.
